The Real Life of TRU Athletes

Daler Tokhirov

Wondering why you should come out and support TRU sports teams? All the way from Uzbekistan, Daler Tokhirov is a midfielder for Thompson Rivers University’s men’s soccer team, and he would love to see you cheering from the stands. We had the chance to catch up with Daler and learn a bit more about him and his team.

He explained he was inspired to play soccer from a young age because everyone around him in Uzbekistan plays so he developed his passion early on.

His biggest role models are his parents, for sacrificing their lives to move here and start fresh. As well, a leader in sport for him is Kobe Bryant, as Daler mentioned: “I read his book and he really motivates and inspires me”.

He chose TRU because he was encouraged to tryout for the soccer team by a friend who already played there. After trying out and making the team, it quickly became home.

He described how he is friends with all 36 players on his team. They have a strong connection and get to joke around and have fun together, on and off the field.

To him, TRU wolfpack games are special because of the atmosphere and the community. They love people coming and cheering them on, as it motivates them to play and helps them feel supported.

We want to thank Daler for his time and for giving us an inside scoop on what it means to be an athelete at Thompson Rivers. Come out and support Daler and his teammates at the Canada West Quarter-Finals on October 28, 2022!
